Muni replies to Mokopane water crisis query

The Mogalakwena Municipality's reply to questions asked about the water challenges in Chroompark and Kameeldoring Park of the past three weeks.

MOKOPANE -Malesela Selokela, Department Head of Communication, said: “The water crisis that had recently taken place in town is now something of the past. It was discovered that a bypass pipeline on the pressure relief valve (PRV) system was leaking heavily and the decision was made that the PRV needed to be replaced.

“This PRV and its pipe arrangement are specialised and not readily available on the shelf”.

According to Selokela it was decided that a straight pipeline be installed to replace the PRV to avoid further leakages.

“The pressure was then reduced through the adjustment of a gate valve on the same pipeline which led to some area of Kameeldoring Park and Chroompark experiencing low water pressure or no water in some parts.

“As the technical services team were responding to the low pressure in the affected areas, the gate valve was lightly adjusted to increase water pressure which led to burst pipes the week of 25 to 29 September. These burst pipes affected Park Street, Amatis Street, Kobalt Street and Slegtkamp Street.

All these burst pipes were repaired by the municipal maintenance teams.

“The municipality supplies water to Chroompark through a pipeline that supplies water to the industrial south area and Kameeldoring Park,” Selokela said.

According to Selokela the pipeline has high pressure for industrial purposes thus a pressure reducing valve was installed for the water supply of the residential area.

“The temporary valve that was installed at the corner of Fourie and Hindon Street was replaced with the permanent valve on Thursday.”

The municipality through the water and sanitation division in the technical department always responds to reported water leakages and blocked sewer pipelines, Selokela said.

“The community is urged to report any problems directly to the office. They must ensure they receive a reference number in case a follow-up is needed.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused during the period. We greatly value our clients and will do our best to assist them where necessary.”
