Sub Zero and Decker set their sights on the top

The Hip Hop duo are currently working on a record label called Deckvito Entertainment, where they plan on advancing local artists and music.

POLOKWANE – The two have produced singles such as Selinah, released in 2016, as well a single titled Kerata jwala which went viral in its own right.

They are now promoting their new single, Ke Mopedi.

“Growing up with my grandparents who made us sing and dance during family gatherings and imitating brass bands with wire crafted trumpets and tin drums as kids paved a way towards what I am doing today.

I still remember when I was in Gr 7, telling my cousin and my sister that we are going to be artists. They made us sing and laughed at the songs we composed at the time.

My mom had a piano and we would sing and as the eldest, my cousin would compose the songs. I grew up with the mentality of being an artist,” Sub Zero explained.

The other member of the duo, Decker, recalled how he heard a few people rapping and decided to give it a try.

“In 2011 I started recording music and in 2015 my craft was recognised by Mopedy, a local rapper who helped put my music out. My talent inspired many young artist to follow in my footsteps,” he explained. The duo who have now built a local fan base, also shared some of the challenges they faced in their journey to the top. “The challenges we face is getting air play from radio stations as many stations only consider calling you in for interviews after a well-known artist cancelled at the last minute. Then you struggle to get to the station on time and you get there disorganised and the feedback we receive as a result of this is purely negative,” Sub Zero explained.

According to the duo, music is more than a hobby to them and has translated itself into a passion. The support they receive from their families and fans motivate them to reach for greater heights.

“When we are performing at an event close to home, our friends will come to watch us perform and after the show ask if we have recorded any new music. Our goal is to be heard, to inspire kids to be creative and to achieve our personal music goals. We would like to perform outside the borders of the country,” Decker concluded.
