POLOKWANE – The shut off of the Olifantspoort Plant is due to the quality of raw water from the river following heavy rains in the Lepelle area, says the Polokwane Municipality.
According to the municipality they received a notice from Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) this morning (Monday) that the Olifantspoort Plant had to be shut off last night due to the quality of raw water from the river following heavy rains in the Lepelle area.
The notice read that the plant is just receiving mud and this will damage filters and other systems should extraction continue.
The plant has been operating at low capacity from Monday morning and this has already affected reservoir levels. All areas being supplied from Olifantspoort Plant will be affected and operations will only resume once the quality of raw water improves, says the municipality.
Water is currently supplied from the Ebenezer Plant, however, all areas on the line from Ga-Chuene, which inlcudes the city area and Seshego will be affected.
High catchment areas will be the first to be affected.
The public is advised to use water sparingly during this period to maintain reservoir levels and avoid serious impact of the situation.
