Govan Mbeki Awards

The Provincial Govan Mbeki Awards was a delight as comedian Thapelo Shampoo Seemise provided an array of wise quips and hilarious jokes as the evening's master of ceremonies.

POLOKWANE – This is an annual celebration and this year’s ceremony was held at Bolivia Lodge on Tuesday, 19 September.

With the theme The Year of OR Tambo: Celebrating Our Liberation Heritage, the awards were entirely focused on the celebration of heritage and most guests came dressed for the occasion dressed in colourful traditional attire.

The MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA), Makoma Makhurupetje, welcomed the guests and congratulated the nominees.

“Apart from expanding on narratives around issues of De-colonisation, this year’s theme further reminds us of the need to re-assert our shared identity as Africans, to embrace each other’s culture and heritage. This is a period when we as the South African family, should ordinarily come together across racial and ethnic divides to celebrate our unity in diversity. In celebrating OR Tambo’s life, it is our responsibility as a nation to ensure the memory and legacy of other martyrs of our liberation struggle do not perish in vain. Govan Mbeki is one such giant that we should be proud to embrace as South Africans,” Makhurupetje said.

“We will certainly not be doing enough if we do not ensure our human settlements are safe, secure and free from squalor. Govan Mbeki would have wanted us to build quality human settlements where women can walk freely at night and children can play safely in the street.”

She added the ANC government is fully committed to providing sustainable human settlements to improve the quality of household life for everyone, especially the poor.
