Brothers share a mic and a stage

With their hit album, Koloi ya Benda Mabili, recorded and ready to release to the public, these music brothers, Makwale and Marothi Lebea are proud and passionate musicians.

POLOKWANE – From Bolobedu in Lenokwe, the brothers began making music in Selobedu, their home language, in 2004. They plan with the launch of their album, Koloi ya Benda Mabili, to give people a taste of what Bolobedu music is all about.

“We have performed at a tavern in Ga-Makibela, Moletji and we recently received an invitation to meet the radio presenters at ZB FM in Zebediela,” Marothi said.

They chose Koloi ya Benda Mabili as the title of their album because they believe life itself is complicated and through their music, they try to show and project a lifetime of experience to their listeners.

“I was 14 and Marothi was 30 when we began doing music together. We are from a musically-inclined family and our brother was also a musician who played concertina in his early years. We traded the concertina for a keyboard which we use in most of our songs to carry on our family’s music legacy,” Makwale added.

Their sponsor, Moruthane Nkadimeng, said he is proud of what the brothers are doing with their talent that comes from their family history and background.

“The brothers also performed at the opening of Pits Lodge earlier this year. We’re still grooming them to become mainstream artists who are proud of their culture and roots as they are mainly still ‘underground’ artists at the moment. I believe most artists don’t invest their talent back to where they come from, Polokwane artists in particular, as they usually ‘run away’ to Gauteng to hopefully make it big that side. I feel we need talented artists in our province to represent us and be proud of their province which is what we’re doing by promoting Makwale and Marothi. They’re immensely talented and I believe in their uniqueness,” Moruthane said.

Besides performing on stage, Makwale and Marothi also DJ on the decks while they perform, play the keyboard and also produce their own songs. The mastering of their songs is done by music producer, Sweet Beats.

“Their single, Mabili, is going to be played on the Top 30 at local radio stations, so keep listening, you never know, you might just catch them,” Moruthane added.
