Teaching is God’s gift to Deborah to build young minds

Pietersburg Comprehensive School (PCS) technology teacher, Deborah Ayo-Akinboye, believes whatever thing you do today is a seed which will speak for you in the future.

POLOKWANE – She lives by this motto through her career choice. Deborah teaches Gr 4 and 6 and says teaching for her is a calling from God. “I obtained an honors in geography and regional planning after school and decided to study towards a teaching qualification thereafter. I have been a teacher for over 10 years now and I greatly appreciate the opportunity it affords me to develop young minds. Although there are many challenges which  come with every profession, I choose to see those challenges as stepping stones to improving oneself as well as learning from past mistakes. During my career as a teacher I have found some children learn faster and understand the work easier than others but it gives me the opportunity to afford those learners who struggle more attention and time to help them grasp the subject. One must be patient in order to succeed in being at teacher. Some of the major challenges I have overcome in my career is being able to speak in the tune and manner the children can understand because learners differ,’’ she explains.

Deborah says teaching is a type of calling God uses to impart knowledge and information onto children to build them for the future.

As September is Heritage Month, Deborah explains culture is an inspirational tool which has the power to build a nation. In her words education and culture go hand in hand and it is important to teach learners to be proud of who they are with regards to their culture and where they come from.

“As a Nigerian national, I speak English with the learners and I also sometimes speak Sepedi but when I get home I speak my home language,” she said.
