SAPS condemn acts of violence during Lephalale protest

The situation was brought under control on Thursday evening.

LIMPOPO – Cases of malicious damage to property and public violence are being investigated following violent protests between Lephalale central business district (CBD) and Marapong on Thursday.

Disgruntled members from a labor union at a local mine barricaded the roads and pelted passing vehicles with stones. Two buses were also torched during this protests, said Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

Public order police members were deployed to the area last evening and the situation was brought under control, he confirmed.

Police investigations continue and arrest of those involved is imminent, added Ngoepe.

The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has condemned these acts in the strongest possible terms.

“Residents are urged to at all times follow the due processes when venting their complaints and desist from engaging in acts of vigilantism. This type of behavior is totally uncalled for and it must be stopped immediately as no problem can be solved by creating another,” said Lt Gen Ledwaba.

The police will act decisively against anyone who commits crime in the name of protests,” he concluded.
