CAC: Looking out for the community of Nobody

Community Against Crime (CAC) is an organisation of about 50 members comprising men and women of the community who decided to patrol the streets day and night to ensure their community is a safe place to live in.

POLOKWANE – The community of Nobody Ga-Mothapo have always relied on the police to solve the crimes of the community, until earlier this year around May when a tragedy shook the community.

One of the residents was murdered in gang-related incident which led the community to take matters into their own hands which ended in an unlawful way.

Tebogo Mojapelo, a resident of Nobody Ga-Mothapo, explained after the tragic incident the community was angry but a few of them managed to have clear heads and start an organisation to keep the community safe and crime-free.

The CAC works with the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the Mankweng Police station and already caught several people wanted for theft, rape or selling illegal substances to minors which they took to police to be arrested.

“We as CAC have selected a lawyer who represents our community, we pay that lawyer from our own pockets,” Tebogo said.

The main purpose of the CAC is to protect the community.

“We cannot sit back and keep expecting the police to take over while we know we only have one police station in Mankweng that is under construction,” said Potata Nkgapele, one of the members of CAC.

Tebogo encouraged anyone from the community interested to join the CAC to attend the community meetings which are held every Sunday. They want people to join them in front of the entire community as they want the community to see and be able to vouch for your intentions.

Station Commander of Mankweng Police Station, Brig Charles Masenamela, acknowledged the good work the CAC is doing to assist the police in protecting their community.

The CAC lacks resources and they ask anyone who can help them with the following to donate: flashlights, reflectors, warm jackets, handcuffs, petrol and a cell phone they can use as a control operation for the community. These items are necessary to assist them with patrolling the streets at night.
