Unlawful Sassa cards found with ‘loan sharks’

The Hawks arrested the group after they received a tip-off about their illegal activities

LIMPOPO – Eight alleged money lenders arrested during an intelligence driven operation in the Burgersfort area on Tuesday 1 August 2017, appeared in court and were granted bail of R1 000.

The Hawks arrested the group at a complex in the area, after the Police Crime Prevention in Burgersfort, together with the Department of Social Development, followed up on a lead about suspects in possession of Sassa cards, bank cards, identification books, identification cards.

During the arrest 328 Sassa cards, 432 bank cards, 230 identification books, 67 smart identification cards and R65 000 cash were seized, said Hawks Spokesperson, Matimba Maluleke.

The suspects (aged between 29 and 58-years-old) faces charges of  contravention of Social Service Act 13 of 2004 Sec 20 (1) (3) and contravention of National Credit Act 34 of 2005. They are set to reappear before the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on 21 September 2017.
