Vuwani protests put on hold

Seven days have been allocated for the relevant structures to reach a suitable resolution.

LIMPOPO – A total shutdown that was looming in Vuwani was postponed after the meeting between Pro-Makhado Municipal Task Team, the government and the Inter-Ministerial Task Team on Sunday at Vuwani Science Centre.

Recently, almost 600 Vuwani residents marched to Vhembe District Municipality to had over a memorandum stating that Vuwani residents prefer to receive services under Vhembe District Municipality rather than under the newly formed municipality of Lim 345, which is a merger of Malamulele, Vuwani and Hlanganani areas.

In a joint statement made by both Inter-Ministerial and Pro-Makhado Municipal Task Team, it is stated: “The provincial government has committed to resolve this matter in a peaceful manner and Pro-Makhado Task Team is willing to ensure stability in the meantime.”

Thousands of learners at Vuwani didn’t go to school last week due to the massive march.

In 2016:

• A total of 27 schools and government buildings were set alight in the area, with the damage estimated at R500 million.

• 29 people were arrested including an ANC councillor and a teacher who was later released on bail.

• Two people have died during the unrest and a house belonging to Pro Malamulele Municipality Task team was set alight.

• During the local government elections, the community boycotted elections to play soccer.
