Sarel Nong summits Mt Kilimanjaro

19 July

POLOKWANE – Just a day after summiting Mt Kilmanjaro, Sarel and the rest of the team are back at base camp with their loved ones.

On Wednesday, his fiance Palesa told Review that Sarel was exceptionally tired but that he was fine.

“I am beyond excited that he reached his goal. This is what LEGENDS are made of,” she said.

Sarel then shared some more photos and videos of the expedition.

Sarel and the rest of the team will arrive in Johannesburg on Thursday evening.

18 July

POLOKWANE – Sarel completed the #Trek4Mandela expedition today, along with 26 other climbers.

His fiance, Palesa says Sarel is now on his way back to Horombo Hut and will be arriving at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday evening.

“I’m super proud of him,” she said.


16 July

POLOKWANE – As there was hardly any reception up Mt Kilimajaro, Sarel’s fiance, Palesa, sent a message on Sunday morning with an update on the Trek.

She said Sarel and the team arrived at the Horombo Hut on Saturday afternoon and would be elevating to Mawenzi Ridge on Sunday and back to Horombo Hut to sleep.

“He says it’s beyond freezing but he is A-okay,” she said.

15 July

POLOKWANE – “Morning all, we are on day 2 today, above cloud. We are heading to volcano desert.”

This was a message received from Sarel Nong on Saturday morning, 07:16 local time.

The expedition will enter its second day today where the team will move into tougher conditions at 4000m above sea level.

“Things are getting serious now, the party is over,” he said.

14 July – 17:37

Sarel reaches the first camp, Mandara Hut, which is 2720m above sea level.

“After Rain Forest tonight, we hit the desert tomorrow,” he said.

POLOKWANE – Sarel will begin the six day journey up Mt Kilimanjaro to Uhuru Peak this morning along with the rest of the #Trek4Mandela team.

Sarel says they will be hiking through the rain forrest today and acknowledged all the support he has received so far.

POLOKWANE – Former Sapa Yopa Motorcycle Club president Sarel Nong is currently in Kilimanjaro where he will begin the #Trek4Mandela expedition on Friday, 14 July. 

Established in 2012, the trek aims to:

  • Create awareness about the challenges facing impoverished girls in rural and poor schools during their monthly cycles
  • Raise funds to purchase sanitary towels so that needy girls can go to school when having their menstrual period
  • Educate people about Mandela Day and the need to take action beyond 18 July, thereby helping to make every day a Mandela Day.

Sarel departed for Tanzania on Wednesday morning along with 26 other people who are part of the expedition.

Sarel and the team were joined by Nelson Mandela’s wife, Graca Machel on their flight to Tanzania.

The expedition is expected to begin tomorrow as the team sets out to summit Uhuru peak on Mt Kilimanjaro.
