Schools from across Limpopo showed off their sport skills during the Provincial School Sport Winter Games over the weekend to be selected for the Limpopo team.

POLOKWANE – The games were hosted by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the Department of Education and was the culmination of the games held from school, circuit, cluster and district levels, respectively.
Athletes selected for the Limpopo team will represent the province at the National School Sport Winter Games set to take place in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal in July.
The prioritised sporting codes include chess, football, hockey, kho kho, netball, rugby, tennis, jukskei and volleyball with the winter games aiming to promote a culture of continuous participation in sport as pronounced in the Sport and Recreation Plan.

According to Department of Sport, Arts and Culture acting Head of Department, Prof Friday Mushwana, this is the seventh of the school sport programme since a clarion call was made back in 2011 by the former minister of sport and recreation that every child in every school should partake in at least one sporting code.

“The effort by the two departments and the men and women of Limpopo to ensure our children played in the 16 sporting codes is greatly appreciated. The province never missed participating in any edition which reflects how serious the school sport programme is taken in Limpopo,” Mushwana said.
He added the work of the school sport structures at the district and provincial level and the expertise from all federations ensure the programme grows from strength to strength.
“The commitment does not go unnoticed and we hail the work of every educator who ensures that a child in sport is a child out of drugs, out of prison, and out of teenage pregnancy,” he said.
