Municipality provides clarity on prolonged roadworks

Residents’ patience has been tested over the past few months as the Polokwane Municipality has been working on roads across the city.

POLOKWANE –  Every neighbourhood shows signs of roadworks with gaping holes visible on most streets.

These holes are a staggering 5cm deep in some places and many motorists say they have to come to a complete standstill at these holes to avoid damaging the underside or tyres on their vehicles.

The expectation is that the condition of the roads is to be improved but months after the tar has been removed, creating these holes, nothing has been done to fill them.

Residents of Ladanna say they struggle to manoeuvre around these holes.

Municipal Spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo, says under normal conditions, it takes approximately three working days to repair a stretch of road. This includes cutting, preparing and repairing the tar.

“It is recommended that a stretch of road be repaired within two days, however, some service providers do not adhere to these guidelines and we plan to fine them. There are several reasons why these holes are left open for such a long time. The main reason is the result of poor planning by these service providers, another is the shortage of tar. However, the municipality has stepped in and offered to provide tar to service providers and residents will have noticed areas that were left destitute are being attended to and the work will continue,” Mothapo explained.
