Dr Lizzy Harrison discussed strategies to protect children in the world of cyberspace

POLOKWANE – With the prevalence of social media in today’s technologically advanced age, it is often difficult to navigate the dangers that come with it.

It is for this reason Dr Lizzie Harrison visited Mitchell House on Monday, 24 April to talk to learners, parents, and personnel about what to post and what not to post on social media.

Dr Lizzie Harrison visits Mitchell House to inform learners, parents, and personnel about what to post and what not to post on social media.

Harrison, together with Social Media Lawyer, Emma Sadleir, aim to educate people, especially learners, on the impact of social media abuse from a legal and psychological perspective.

During the presentation, she discussed the strategies to protect children in the world of cyberspace. She also urged parents to not assume their children are safe when they are on the internet and talked about what children might get up to on social media.

With everything we post on social media, Harrison shared the five most important and dangerous categories to keep in mind with what we post:

• Principals.

• Parents.

• Prospective employers.

• Police.

• Paedophiles.

“Those are the five P’s we should always keep in mind when we post on social media,” she advised.

Another topic she discussed was how posts on social media might affect job applications which is another reason people should be careful what they post.

“Most big corporations tend to hire individuals specifically to check profiles of applicants on social media, just so they get to know more about them as an individual. This information is often more revealing than what you have put in your CV, which can also cost your job application to be unsuccessful due to some of your posts,” she explained.
