Beating poverty through education

"If I could do it, so can you."

MOKOPANE – “EDUCATION cuts the string of poverty.”

These were the wise words of Kgabo Seopa (34), who motivated learners from 34 disadvantaged schools in the villages around Mokopane.

Seopa grew up in poverty in a village near Sterkrivier that consisted of dirt roads and potholes. He inspired the learners by letting them know that even though growing up in poor conditions, they can still make good grades and achieve what they want in life.

The last two years was very difficult for him as he is working during the day and still goes to class every Tuesday and Thursday evening to keep his knowledge growing while studying. He encourages the learners not to forget their humble beginning as he is still supporting his family.

Seopa, gave an astounding motivational speech at the recent Bakenberg South Education Awards to the current Gr 12 learners from the various disadvantaged schools.

Seopa is the President of the Baswarateu Foundation in Johannesburg, who is led by a team of professionals in their own field of expertise.

These professionals from Limpopo all share the same passion about the next generation: upbringing and poverty alleviation through sustainable means of education. He is also the Chairman of the Bakenberg South Circuit.

He hopes to be a professor at the age of 39 and strongly believes that the pillar of strength is education, because it cuts the strings of poverty. He said: “With education comes knowledge and if you gain exposure it all leads to success”.
