Modimolle ‘warthog hunter’ to know his fate on Friday

The accused was arrested and charged for murder after he allegedly shot and killed Jan Railo (23 ) after he mistook him for a warthog

LIMPOPO – The formal bail application of the 39-year-old hunter continued today in the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court.

The accused was arrested and charged for murder after he allegedly shot and killed Jan Railo (23 ) after he mistook him for a warthog “bosvark”on the evening of 11 February, said Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

The accused together with another woman  were hunting for warthogs “bosvarke” when they allegedly heard a movement nearby. “The man then allegedly fired shots in the direction hitting the victim… when they reached the spot, they realised they shot a human being,” according to an earlier police report.

Railo who was later confirmed to be a worker at a neighboring farm died on the scene.

The suspect was arrested the next day and has been in custody since then. He appeared briefly on 16 February for a formal bail application but the case was postponed due to the fact the suspects lawyer didn’t pitch up. Time was given for the accused to acquire the services of another lawyer.

Today the arguments by both the defense and the state in the bail application were concluded. The case has been remanded to Friday, 24 February for bail judgement.

The suspect remains in custody.
