No arrests in Waterval mob justice incident

A man was assaulted and set alight after residents accused him of rape, says the police

LIMPOPO – The police in Waterval are investigating a case of murder following the mob justice incident that took place at Mpheni village in Waterval yesterday (Saturday).

According to information, community members apprehended a Zimbabwean national whom they accused of rape. They took him to the local community leader who told them to call the police, but the residents decided to take take matters into their own hands and before the police could arrive on the scene they has assaulted and set the accused on fire, said Police Spokesperson,  Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

When the police arrived on the scene, the victim had already burnt beyond recognition, Mojapelo added.

“No arrest have been made a yet and the police are appealing to anyone with information to contact the nearest police.”

The conduct of the Mpheni community is condemned in the strongest possible terms. We urge all members of the community to report any criminal activity to the police and refrain from resorting to acts of vigilantism, he concluded.
