City’s golf club in need of urgent financial help

Club members suggested the committee should find alternative means of resolving the club's financial predicament.

POLOKWANE – A cloud of uncertainty hangs over the Polokwane Golf Club with regard to their financial situation.

Club Committee Chairperson, Len Olley, made this announcement during an unofficial club meeting on Tuesday evening when it was suggested that the services of the Club Financial Manager, Charlie Smith, and his wife, Lynette, be terminated.

The suggestion was immediately shot down by club members who said the committee must find alternative means of resolving the club’s financial predicament.

“The suggestion was made purely out of a financial standpoint after thorough thought went into the matter. We have to look at all avenues to find a solution to the club’s current financial predicament as there is uncertainty about the club’s continued existence if some drastic measures are not taken. The suggestion to terminate the services of Smith and his wife was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever needed to make,” Olley explained.

Some of the club members suggested alternative avenues of resolving the financial strains on the club such as letting some of the unused buildings and facilities to business entities which will offer an additional income for the club.

Following the staunch refusal from club members to terminate the Smiths’ services and the other suggestions made, the termination has for the time being been revoked. “Words cannot express our gratitude for the support and loyalty the club members have shown us over the past two weeks. Although the way forward for the club still seems uncertain, i am confident that with the help of our members we will manage to rise above our financial woes,” Smith said.
