Golf Development paves the way for golfers

The Development Programme's main aim is to expose the sport of golf to children that simply cannot afford to play the sport.

POLOKWANE – A golf Development Programme is paving the way for underprivileged children to compete in the sport.

Polokwane Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Teaching Professional Jean Sadie, and South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) Limpopo team coach Shaun Mouton, have been working hard to develop the sport for underprivileged children.

The Development Programme’s main aim is to expose the sport of golf to children that simply cannot afford to play the sport. “The Programme identifies schools with underprivileged children and then we work with these children, we coach them and supply them with the necessary equipment to do the training,” said Sadie.

During the programme they will also identify children who are talented and willing to play.

These children will be chosen for the Polokwane League Team.

There are currently 12 players chosen for the Polokwane League Team and they will compete in different competitions throughout the year.

There is also a Limpopo League Team and these players already have handicaps and currently belong to a club. “We either help these players with finances needed to belong to a club, or they have their own arrangements with their clubs,” said Sadie. He said the Limpopo League Team competed in the SAGDB Tournament and took second place in the B league.

“We didn’t compete in the A league because we only had four players at the time, but I am sure that if we had six players, we would have had a top three position.”

He added they they aim to grow the development programme even more this year by identifying more schools and getting more children involved in the programme.

Sadie said that any schools or children who are interested in the programme, can contact them at 072 207 1139.
