Woman recovering in local hospital after being impaled on fence

Reports from the incident indicate that the woman was trying to climb over the fence at a house in Flora Park

POLOKWANE – A woman believed to be in her 40’s is recovering at a local hospital after she was impaled on the palisade fencing at a house in Flora Park.

Netcare 911 Spokesperson, Chris Botha, said they were informed of the accident by a passerby at around 19:15 on Saturday. He said passerby heard the woman’s cries for help and subsequently reported the incident.

“Netcare 911 paramedics responded to a call in Flora Park and found a female impaled on the palisade fence. Reports from the incident indicate that the woman was trying to climb over the fence when she slipped and her leg was impaled on one of the fence posts,” Botha said.

The paramedics called for assistance and a paramedic living close by came to help. They managed to remove the piece of palisade impaling the woman’s leg with a hacksaw at around 20:30, stabilised her on the scene and transported her to the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital.

“In cases such as these it is safer to transfer the patient with the metal still in the leg as it needs to be determined how to best remove the metal safely without causing more damage,” Botha explained.

He added the the woman was very lucky as the metal missed her major arteries and she is expected to make a full recovery after the necessary treatment and recovery time.
