Two officers injured in shootout with armed suspects

The police in Louis Trichardt have launched a manhunt for a group of suspects involved in a business robbery at a cash and carry store in the industrial area this morning

LIMPOPO – The police in Louis Trichardt have launched a manhunt for a group of suspects, after two back-up officers were injured in a shootout with suspects following a  business robbery at a cash and carry store in the industrial area earlier today (Saturday), says the police.

“According to information, the police responded to a complaint of an assault of a security guard at the said cash and carry store in Unika street. On arrival the group of about 20 suspects, travelling in two vehicles, opened fire at the police. The police responded and the suspects abandoned the vehicles and ran into the nearby bushes,” said Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

“The suspects managed to get away with two 9mm pistols, belonging to the guards, and an undisclosed amount of cash from the cash register. This after their failed attempt to blast the safe with explosives,” he continued.

The recovered BMW has been reported stolen in Cleveland and the Isuzu KB bakkie in Randfontein, both in December 2016.

He added: “Two of our back-up members were slightly injured during the shooting. It is not clear if any of the suspects got shot during the incident.”

No arrests have been effected at this stage and anyone with information is requested to contact Makhado SAPS at 015 519 4300, the crime stop number 0860010111 or their nearest police station.
