Wildlife threatened by poor security? muni explains

The recent poaching of yet another rhino at the Polokwane Game Reserve has raised the question of whether the security measures at the reserve are sufficient.

POLOKWANE – Some even described just how simple it is for poachers to gain access into the reserve, given the “inadequate fencing” and other measures.

“Driving around the game reserve’s borders you can see that the fences that are up are not nearly enough to keep poachers and other unwelcome guests at bay.

“It is quite easy getting over the fence,” says Corné Husselman, a concerned resident.

Municipal Spokesperson, Disree Manyane, explains that rhino poaching is a more complex matter security-wise and that the answer goes beyond an electrical fence, even globally.

“There is research that shows that even the most advanced security parks fall victim to rhino poaching.”

Could poaching be linked to staff, Review asked, and she didn’t exclude the possibility.

“There is also evidence that in some instances, poaching is conducted as an inside job.

“The Polokwane Game Reserve is adequately fenced and the fence is maintained.”

She explains that the lack of an electric fence on the reserve’s perimeter is due to budgetary constraints.

“The extent of the reserve is 3 200 hectares. The construction of an electric fence is estimated at no less the R23 million.”

Anyone who claims to have approached the municipality to assist or to volunteer with installing fencing is encouraged to come forth as the municipality welcomes such partnerships and contributions, she added.

“For security reasons, we cannot divulge the reserve’s security plans. However, there is currently a budget allocation for the security upgrades in the reserve. There are surveillance towers installed in the game reserve as part of the project. There are also other security measures in process,” according to Manyane.

The municipality will continue implementing its mandate around conservation and will continue working with other agencies to research and consider other security alternatives, she said.
