Man (31) in court for allegedly assaulting SAPS captain

The 31-year-old suspect arrested in connection with the brutal assault of a police captain earlier this week, appeared in Polokwane Magistrate's Court yesterday (Wednesday).

POLOKWANE – The suspect faces charges of Attempted Murder, Robbery and Crimen Injuria after the alleged brutal attack on Monday evening. He was remanded in custody for bail application, according to Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

The 56-year-old police captain was off duty at the time of the incident confirmed Mojapelo.

According to an earlier police statement: “the incident started with an argument which led to the assault… the suspect allegedly overpowered the officer, grabbed his official firearm and threatened to shoot him. A passerby managed to grab the firearm from the suspect but the suspect continued to assault the officer until he was unconscious.”

“The reason for the argument is not yet known and the officer is said to be in a coma and therefore unable to speak,” said Mojapelo.

The  officer who was airlifted to a hospital in Pretoria in a critical condition is said to be still be in a serious but stable condition.

He is set to reappear before the court on 5 January 2016 concluded Mojapelo.
