Accident victim family’s plea for help

The biker injured in an accident in the city at the weekend, Antonio Camisa, is still in critical condition. He is being treated at the Netcare Montana Hospital in Pretoria.

POLOKWANE – Camisa’s employer, Annemarie Niemann, told Review his condition has improved under the circumstances.

“Although he is still in a coma, doctors told his wife, Renette, it is the body’s way of healing itself,” Niemann said.

She continued, stating there is no prognosis regarding the damage to Camisa’s brain as yet, and that only time will tell.

Casima was en route to work at approximately 08:30 when a truck pulled in ahead of him on the corner of Landdros Maré and Pietersburg Street. He fell from his motorcycle, which got caught behind a wheel of the truck and was dragged for metres on end before it caught flame.

Video footage from the scene of the accident

Forensic accident reconstruction expert, Philip Smit told Review he is in the process of determining the speed of the vehicles, but he can confirm that Camisa did not exceed the speed limit and was not riding at high speed.

Camisa was put under a medically induced coma shortly after the accident to halt the swelling and bleeding on his brain.

Doctors operated on his left leg which was badly broken. Four of his ribs were broken in the accident which perforated his left lung.

Camisa’s father-in-law, Bert Nel, says in addition to these injuries, Camisa’s vertebrae shifted and his hand is swollen.

Doctors informed the family that his leg and lung are healing well. They also said they will perform another brain scan soon to assess the damage of the bleeding on his brain.

While this is good news, Camisa’s medical bills are piling up. Niemann posted a request on her Facebook page asking members of the community to assist in this regard.

“Even a R10 will help,” she pleaded.

“The doctors are content with his progress but we all know the biggest issue still lies ahead as the medical bills will need to be covered and the family needs our support,” she concluded.
