23 lives lost on Limpopo roads

The police are investigating several cases of culpable homicide following several accidents that took place on our roads this weekend.

LIMPOPO – According to a statement issued by Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, “In the Louis Trichardt area, four people died after two vehicles, a sedan and a truck, collided on the N1 North next to Musekene on Saturday evening.

“The sedan travelling South to North collided head-on with a truck travelling in the opposite direction killing two men, which in included and the driver of the sedan, and two women, one being pregnant, instantly. The passenger and the driver of the truck and a male passenger travelling in the sedan sustained serious injuries and were transported to Siloam Hosiptal for further medical attention. “All four deceased are still unknown.”

In a separate accident one person was killed instantly and three sustained serious injuries after two vehicles crashed head-on along the Louis Trichardt and Mara Road on Sunday morning at around 00:30.

Three people, aged between 30 and 40-years-old, were killed after a minibus taxi conveying 15 passengers and a diesel tanker collided on the N1 North along the Landdros Maré bypass on Saturday evening at around 21:00. The three deceased, the driver of the minibus taxi and two female passengers were killed instantly. The driver of the truck was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

In the Roedtan area a minibus taxi transporting 16 passengers overturned killing three instantly on Sunday morning. The taxi travelling from the Modimolle direction overturned about 3km from the Rathoke Weight Bridge. Three female passengers were killed and the driver of the taxi was certified dead on arrival at the hospital.

On Sunday evening 11 were killed after a sedan collided with a truck on the N1 South near the Nyl Plaza.

“It is alleged the driver of a sedan lost control of the vehicle after a tyre burst, causing the vehicle to roll into on coming traffic, colliding with a truck.

Ten people were killed when the vehicle burst into flames and one later passed away at a local hospital.

The truck driver sustained injuries on his legs as was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.  Forensic investigations are being conducted to determine their ages and identities of the deceased.

This brings the total number of road fatalities in the province to 23 from Saturday night to Sunday night which remains a worrying factor, said Ngoepe.
