Beauty queen hosts pageant to empower young girls

"By hosting this pageant, I hope to help the less fortunate,” says the young and vibrant beauty queen.

POLOKWANE – Linda Chidi, a 17-year-old local has taken part in pageants since the age of 11 and says for her, it is about more than just beauty.

The Curro Northern Academy learner took part in her first pageant when she 11-years-old in which she was crowned queen in the Miss Seshego Junior and first princess in the Little Miss Meropa competition.

“For me, it is about giving back to the community,” she said. One of the main drives of most beauty pageants is community service and giving back and, with that in mind, Linda is currently organising a charitable pageant, the Miss Beauty With a Purpose pageant.
“Anyone from Polokwane and surrounding areas, even those from rural areas who never thought they could be models or ever take part in pageants, will now have the opportunity to do so.”
She says the motivation behind the pageant is to empower women as she believes they are always being belittled, as well as to offer those from rural areas an opportunity to experience the world of modelling. “By hosting this pageant, I hope to help the less fortunate,” she explains. The pageant will be held on 3 December at Library Gardens from 11:00 till late. It is open to girls between the ages of 12 and 24 years.

Lindi has had a busy year, raking in titles including Miss Winter Polokwane, Miss South Africa Junior Teen Provincial Title and Miss Beauty World International SA (first princess). She will represent South Africa in the Dominican Republic in next year’s Miss Beauty World International, which she looks forward to. “I’m in the process of raising funds for the trip on my own,” she said.
