Angry mob torch tavern owners property after murder

A tavern owner wife shoots two suspected robbers, killing one wounding the other

POLOKWANE – The Westenburg Police are looking for  a group allegedly responsible for the setting alight of property belonging to a tavern owner this after two suspected robbers were shot by the owners wife early this morning (Sunday).

According to a statement issued by Police Spokesperson, L T. Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe at around 01:10 the police received report of an armed robbery at a tavern in Extention 44. On arrival at the scene it was reported that the 39-year-old wife of the tavern owner had allegedly shot two suspected robbers, twin brothers from the area.

“One of the brothers died on the scene and the other was wounded and was taken to the hospital in a critical condition.”

An angry crowd who had  gathered outside the tavern owner’s property, attacked the family, trapping them inside the building and attempted to burn them by setting the properties alight.

The victim’s house, tavern and three cars were torched during the incident.  Three state vehicles were also damaged.

The tavern owner was also injured during this incident.

No arrests have been made regarding the arson attack but police investigations continue.

The tavern owner’s wife has since then been arrested for murder and attempted murder and will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate Court tomorrow (Monday) on charges of murder and attempted murder said Ngoepe.

The Provincial Commissioner–LT. General Nneke Ledwaba has warned community members who are still continuing taking the law into their hands to stop this tendency because it a serious offence to do that and that no stone will be left unturned until all those who are involved are brought to book.
