GIYANI: Hawks to investigate leaked maths paper

The Department of Basic Education on Tuesday confirmed that a Grade 12 mathematics examination paper was leaked to students in Giyani, Mopani District.

LIMPOPO – According to a Department spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, the department has established that learners from a few schools in the area had access to the second maths paper before it was written.

Mhlanga further added that all the scripts of the schools in the area will be quarantined to establish if there are any patterns.

“The department takes this security breach in a serious light and have involved Hawks and police in the matter.

“A national and provincial team will work together with law enforcement to get to the bottom of this matter in order to take appropriate action against those responsible.”

Limpopo Department of Education Spokesperson, Dr Naledzani Rasila earlier warned that the anyone, be they learners or departmental employees, found guilty of leaking exam papers or any other educational scandal, will be punished.

“The leaking or copying of exam papers is a crime. We as the department will not only take disciplinary actions against anyone found guilty of these offences, we will also lay criminal charges against them,” Rasila said.
He added that learners found taking part in cheating, stealing of exam papers or the copying of these papers, will be expelled from the school and they could possibly be suspended from writing exams for a period of three years or more.
