The pros and cons of parole

Offenders often assist communities in the building of schools and houses and can make a difference in society if they are afforded the opportunity

POLOKWANE – Department of Corrections Acting Deputy Regional Commissioner, Kenneth Mthombeni, explains that parole is the temporal release of offenders from the centre before their sentence expires. “A few of the requirements include that the offenders have served half of their sentence and Factors such as good behaviour and reconciliation with the victim are also taken into consideration.

He continues, saying not everyone is eligible for parole and victims play an important role in the parole hearing of an offender and determining whether or not they are released on parole.

“If a prisoner is serving a sentence for rape, we have to take into consideration their victims. The victim has the right to intersect the parole of the offender, given that they have not reconciled with the offender. It is possible, however, for the offender to be let out even when the victim has not forgiven them,” Mthombeni said.

According to Mthombeni, the purpose of parole is to assist with the offender’s reintegration into society. “The offender is still serving their sentence, but on the outside. The offender will still have to be monitored,” he continued.

He added that society needs to be accepting of offenders and not treat them unfairly. He explains why, saying offenders often assist communities in the building of schools and houses and can make a difference in society if they are afforded the opportunity.
