‘The white man of Limpopo’ targeted by muti killers

Chairperson of People Living with Albinism calls off birthday celebrations in fear of muti killers

LIMPOPO – The Limpopo Chairperson of People Living with Albinism, Ropson Rambuwani says he received a tip-off from a convicted criminal that three hit-men, hired from KwaZulu–Natal, are in Vhembe planning to kill him for muti purposes.

The killing of albinos for muti purposes is an ongoing practice in African countries like Uganda and Tanzania but has become common practice in South Africa in recent times.

Rambuwani, popularly known as “The white man of Limpopo”, says a man currently serving a jail term in the Sinthumule Kutama Maximum Security Prison informed him of a meeting that had taken place in 2013. The man claimed he was solicited to join the hit squad but refused.

“The man, told me since he accepted God as his saviour, a pastor prayed for him to repent. He told me the secret was causing him sleepless nights,” Rambuwani explains.

The man, who is known to the Rambuwani family and also to the SAPS, further disclosed that a brand new taxi had already been bought as a gift for the hit men after their “task had been executed”.

Rambuwani informed the police of the man’s claims and as he suspected the hit would take place on his birthday, there were no celebrations.

The prisoner said Rambuwani’s body parts will be worth a lot of money because of his intellect.

According to the Secretary of People Living with Albinism in Limpopo, Willie Sexwale, this is the first alleged incident of this nature in the province.

“It is a big blow. Those cases are very rare in Limpopo. People with albinism should take care of themselves. Our people should be extra careful. We must always be alert,” Sexwale said.

Spokesperson for the Thohoyandou Police, Col Mashudu Malelo said Rambuwani should open a case and it will be investigated.

The killing of people with albinism is growing in the country. In Kwazulu-Natal on Tuesday, a traditional healer and a pastor appeared in the Manguzi Magistrate’s Court for the murder of Thandazile Mpunza after she was murdered and dismembered.
