Rocky road to recovery lies ahead for young bomb cracker victim

Over a month ago, the story of Kosie Wessels, who lost his hand in a firework accident, rocked the city.

POLOKWANE – The community came together in support of the seven-year-old and soon help streamed in from all over the country. Kosie was transferred to Mediclinic Limpopo from the provincial hospital and was deemed fit to recover at home a mere four days after the accident.

A fund was established by the Child Medi Organisation and so far, it has garnered enough money to have a prosthetic hand made for Kosie. Although the prostheis is ready, Kosie’s hand has not fully healed and he will only have it fitted once his injuries have healed completely.

“He’s not ready to go to school yet. He sleeps poorly and is frequently awake. He is also still receiving counseling as he gets frustrated and aggressive when he is not able to do things he used to because he lost his hand,” his mother, Caroline Strydom said.

Amor Schoeman, a Child Medi Organisation representative said the deposit for the prosthesis has been paid. “Once he receives the prothesis Kosie will have to go for rehabilitation where a therapist will held him exercise his muscles and use his new hand,” she explained.

Schoeman said Kosie still needs a lot of therapy and rehabilitation and that the sessions are costly.
