Suspected gold smuggler remains in custody

The suspect was arrested at the Beitbridge port of entry after attempting to smuggle gold worth over R1 million into South Africa.

LIMPOPO: A 45-year-old man arrested for possession of gold/ precious stone and bribery on 25 September 2016, has been remanded in custody until 12 October.

Jacquim Mbuyi  from Congo was arrested at the Beitbridge port of entry after he attempted to smuggle gold worth over R1 million into South Africa said Limpopo spokesperson for Hawks, Matimba Maluleke.

“He failed to disclose the goods he was ferrying to a scanning operator He adds.

“After attempting to bribe the official twice, he was told to drive his truck to a scanner where the  truck was scanned and searched manually. Police found undeclared goods wrapped in brown tape.”

Police confirmed the goods to be 2kg of gold and 436kg of suspected unprocessed gold to the value of over 0ne million rand.

Mbuyi was arrested immediately and has been in custody since then. He will reappear before the court on 12 October for a formal bail application concludes Maluleke.
