Lim arts theatre gets the stamp of approval

The plans to develop the municipality's world-class theatre have been approved and development is underway.

POLOKWANE – This development will be done in consultation with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture to develop the best provincial theatre located in Oos Street.

Polokwane Municipality Mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng said the area identified covers two sites measuring approximately 15 839 m² and 29 934 m² each. According to Nkadimeng, “There will be other land used to complement, accompany and attract a wider market for the theatre to be sustainable.”

Joel Legodi, project manager said they have appointed a service provider, Beracah Economic Consulting to draft a feasibility report which they submitted to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. “We need to meet with the relevant stakeholders to finalise a few more details. The meeting was scheduled for 4 August but had to be postponed due to the local government elections,” said Legodi.

He further said they want to see which municipality personnel they will be liaising with so the project can move forward swiftly.

According to Legodi, the initial budget for the theatre was R350 million and the visual aspects of the theatre will be similar to the Mmabana Cultural Centre in North West.

David Mosaka, Beracah Economic Consulting Director said their job was to conduct a feasibility study report which they managed to complete in three months. “We submitted the report to the department and we are waiting for their input so we can incorporate them in our final feasibility report. We looked at the financial, technical and managerial aspects when compiling the report,” explained Mosaka.

He further said they were given four months to compile this report which they completed in three. He added they also did the architectural designs for the provincial theatre and they will have a formal meeting with the relevant parties sometime in September.
