4 suspected rhino poachers arrested in Hoedspruit, Nelspruit

All four suspects appeared in the Hoedspruit Magistrates' Court today on the charges of possession of an unlicensed fire arm and ammumition and Conspiracy to commit rhino poaching.

LIMPOPO – Information received by members of the Rhino Task Team led to the arrest of a 22-year-old suspected poacher in Hoedspruit on Wednesday 23 August.

The man’s vehicle was stopped on the Orpen Road at approximately 15:35 yesterday and searched said police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto.

“During the arrest members confiscated a 375 rifle with a silencer and ammunition… he was not licensed to carry the items,” added Otto.
Further investigations led to the arrest of three more suspects, aged between 22 and 38 years old, in Nelspruit.

All four suspects appeared in the Hoedspruit Magistrates’ Court today on the charges of possession of an unlicensed fire arm and ammunition and Conspiracy to commit rhino poaching.

Two of the suspects, one from Pretoria and the other from Nelspruit, were released on R5000 bail.

“The bail application for the remaining two suspects is continuing.”

The cases were remanded to 28 September she concluded.
