This young feminist will not be ignored

Kgoao KK Mametja is a Gr 11 Mitchell House learner who is very outspoken about her feelings and values...

POLOKWANE – She is well spoken, well mannered and a motivated learner who always strives to do better and says she is a ardent feminist.

“Many people think feminism as about hating males but that is not what it is about. When people misinterpret the meaning of feminism, they disregard the movement which is sad.”
She believes all women should be appreciated because of the sacrifices they make. She says feminism is all about equity and not equality. “There is a difference between the two. There must always be equality but there must also be equity, fairness and justice where we receive equal rights and responsibilities because we deserve them,” she explains.
KK learned about the 1956 march when she was in Gr 8 and says she understands the significance behind the march a bit more now that she is older because she says she has been moved by a united action against injustice and inequality against women.
“It was empowering that they united against all odds and found strength not only in themselves but in each other to make a difference,” says KK. She says the march has influenced her greatly and she is thankful because she is afforded more opportunities because all those women stood up for their rights.
KK is also an all-rounder at the school as she excels in academics, on the sports field and culture activities. She recently obtained full colours for drama, something she is very passionate about.
KK says she loves drama because it affords her the opportunity to convey a message to others.
“It’s a very effective way of spreading a message, educating and entertaining people,” she explains.
She plays soccer for the girls’ first team along with netball for the A-team. She has occupied a spot in the top 10 for academics since her Gr 8 year and says education is very important to her and that she loves to learn.
Besides drama, KK has a passion for the environment which has inspired her to become an environmental lawyer or a conservationist. She plans to study at the University of Cape Town.
She believes that all people, regardless of gender, have a duty to make a difference. “It is everyone’s responsibility to care for the environment and promote equal rights, we need to give whatever we have to offer to others. We must respect each other in order for everyone to get along,” she concludes.
