The benefits of medical circumcisions

The procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete and is fairly painless

POLOKWANE – For centuries, circumcision has been done for traditional and cultural purposes, however, in recent years, there have been added benefits of medical male circumcision.

The procedure involves the removal of the foreskin.

According to local doctor, Dr Mabowa Makhomisane, there are many advantages of this procedure.

“It reduces the chances of contracting Sexually transmitted Infections (STIs) such as Gonorrhea and Syphilis. It can also reduces the risk of HIV infection, and it also protects women from cervical cancer. It is also more hygienic, and it is a treatment option for problematic cases of phimosis that does not resolve with other treatments, and chronic urinary tract infections,” Makhomisane explains.

The procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete and is fairly painless.

Makhomisane, says circumcision is fairly painless, as local anesthesia is administered.

“Once it is done, it takes about seven to 12 days to heal and the man will be ready to have sexual intercourse within four to six weeks. The most common misconceptions about circumcision is that it is very painful and can only be performed during winter,” he says.

He went on to dispel some of these misconceptions.

“We do it all year round. Healing is not determined by the season but by the type of medication we give after the procedure.”
