A Jack of all trades

Not only is Semenya a rugby fanatic, he also takes part in other sporting codes such as cricket, netball and soccer

POLOKWANE – Coach of the Limpopo Blue Bulls senior women’s team and Moletjie Rugby Club, Ignatious Semenya is a jack of all trades.

Not only is Semenya a rugby fanatic, he also takes part in other sporting codes such as cricket, netball and soccer.

Semenya became a rugby coach in 2005.  He has led provincial teams on the sidelines in national rugby tournaments for many years, and says his biggest wish is to produce professional players in the future.

Originally from Moletjie, near Ga-Ramakgaphola, he says land was allocated to him by the Moletjie Royal House, Moshate, where he was tasked with erecting sport fields for young people in his community.

“I developed a love and passion for sport after I realised that the majority of young people get involved with criminal activity because they have nothing to keep them occupied. High teenage pregnancy rates is one of the reasons why I decided to cater for both men and women athletes,” Semenya explained.

He says his main focus was rugby, but later realised not everyone can become a rugby player.

“I learned the rules and tricks of different sporting codes and now I can proudly say I am a jack of all sporting trades,” he explains.

He adds that it takes hard work, dedication and passion to learn and excel in something.

“My aim is to have as many sport fields as possible in Moletjie to keep young people off the streets. Sport can be used as a means to put food on the table and it can also teach young people a few things about life. We need more people in sport to make our society a better place,” says Semenya.
