Former cop finds true calling as teacher

He goes above and beyond to educate and form future leaders.

POLOKWANE – Teachers are at the forefront of the education system and they are responsible for educating the future leaders of the country.

It goes without saying that they are an important part of our everyday lives.

Deon Kruger has been teaching for eight years and joined Noorderland High School in 2007 as a life orientation teacher.

“I was a police officer before I joined Noorderland. I decided to become a teacher because I have always loved children and I felt it would be a great career choice for me to help educate and form the future leaders,” Kruger explained.

According to him teachers have the responsibility to always go above and beyond to be great at what they do because offering valuable education to children is crucial.

“I always try my level best do more than what is expected of me. I follow up with the learners and not only make sure their work is done but I help them make educated and good career choices as well. As teachers we have an immense responsibility because we are grooming future leaders,” he continued.

Kruger is not only a teacher but also the sports coordinator, and the career exhibition and blood drive organiser at the school.

The husband and father further explained why he felt compelled to be above average. “The school has been extremely good to me. I love the children, the staff and the atmosphere so going above and beyond is my way of repaying them for their kindness and the opportunity.”

He explained that teaching is a team effort and he wouldn’t be able to be such a great teacher if it wasn’t for the support he gets from the learners and the school.

“We want to work well together and work as a team and we believe teamwork is one of the most the important aspects of teaching. The way we as teachers treat the learners also sets us apart from other schools. We are genuinely concerned about their well-being and their education,” Kruger concluded.
