Nkadimeng retains mayoral candidacy

"We don't know what qualifies her to retain her position"

POLOKWANE – The ANC recently announced its mayoral candidates for the 2016 local government elections, and the Polokwane mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng, has retained her candidacy as mayor.

Nkadimeng delivered the State of the City Address on Wednesday, where she outlined the municipality’s development plan in the coming year.

She wasted no time in addressing the issue of water shortages and said R375 million would be spent on the provision of water infrastructure in the next year.

A big concern for the municipality is the current state of asbestos pipes in the city as these have reached their life expectation cycle

As part of an initiative to restore the income generating asset of the municipality, the municipality will replace the old asbestos pipes with new pipes.

“The budget for this project amounts to R235 million in 2016/17 while R205 million will be spent in the later years,” said Nkadimeng.

Opposition not surprised at Nkadimeng retaining her candidacy

EFF Limpopo secretary, Jossey Buthane, said the EFF had not seen any changes since Nkadimeng became the mayor of Polokwane.

We don’t know what qualifies her to retain her position

Buthane stated that there were still villages without streetlights, outstanding municipal bills and corruption that hadn’t decreased. “We see her retention as a barbaric act by the ANC to protect corrupt people,” he said.

DA Provincial Leader, Jacques Smalle, said the DA was not surprised by Nkadimeng’s retention, adding they didn’t foresee many changes in management in the future.

“The mayor has had enough time to take accountability for wrongdoings in the municipality which she is yet to do and we would like to see some accountability from her side,” Smalle said.

The ANC, however, has full confidence in Nkadimeng.

“We acknowledge the role she played in managing the municipality and we are confident that she will continue with her good work,” said ANC Limpopo spokesperson, Aluwani Netsianda.
