Puletso talks healthy feet and lower limbs

According to studies, around 87% of the population suffer from at least one foot or lower limb discomfort or condition

POLOKWANE – Podiatrist, Puletso Lekola shares insight regarding health issues concerning the feet and lower limbs.

Puletso explains that there is a wide variety of health issues related to foot or lower limb injuries or conditions like ankle sprains, bone injuries, arthritis and Achilles tendinopathy (a condition that causes pain, swelling, stiffness and weakness of the Achilles tendon that joins your heel bone to your calf muscles), among others.

She says podiatrists are highly skilled healthcare professionals trained to deal with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, management of medical and surgical conditions of the feet and lower limbs.

Puletso explains that in adults, sports injuries are common causes of pain, while hereditary or flexible (musculoskeletal) causes occur more often with younger people.

“Some of these diseases and injuries are manageable, however, it will require investing in regular visits to a podiatrist, as well as foot care and proper footwear. One of the most common symptoms associated with foot or lower limb injury or disease is pain. Treatment and diagnoses depends on the age of the patient and the podiatrist’s findings during an examination of the affected limb(s).”

Puletso’s daily duties as a podiatrist include assessing and evaluating foot and lower limb problems. She says she diagnoses and provides treatment along with offering foot health education.

“I manage and monitor foot problems and deformities caused by diabetes, arthritis and HIV/aids,” she says.

Puletso, who is currently based in Soweto, opened her own practice, Puletso Lekola Podiatrist, last year, however, she offers home visits.

She can be reached at 083 747 8034 or (011) 055 6446.
