Don’t allow winter to scare your hair

Hairdresser, Matlakala Sekele, recommends braids for winter

POLOKWANE – She says because hair breakage increases due to dry and windy conditions, it is best to braid your hair to minimise damage.

“Pulling too hard while combing your hair also causes hair breakage,” she says.

Sekele says perfectly braided hair can last up to six weeks and there are several types of braids such as standard braids, cork screws and twists to choose from.

Sekele shares her tips on how to keep your braids looking good:

• Use hair growers to treat the scalp, this will help your hair grow faster leaving you with a nourished scalp.

• Use a moisturising braid spray for the scalp if you don’t have time to apply hair grower as it yields the same results.

• Apply oil sheen spray on the braids to give it a shiny finish.

• Avoid styling the braids in a way that will pull your natural hair.

When it comes to the colour of braids, Sekele says you should choose the colour that suits your complexion.

“Black is safe and looks good on everyone, regardless of whether you are dark or light skinned, but you’re free to play around as there are a variety of colours to choose from.”

She says braided hair grows faster so people should not keep the braids in too long. “If you keep the braids in for longer than recommended, they will damage your natural hair and it will look untidy because the natural growth will be exposed,” she explains.

Matlakala is the owner of Zani-Lesego hair and beauty academy at 30 Market Street, Polokwane.
