Road safety – motorists and bikers take notice

In light of recent events, it is quite clear to see that motorcyclists are much more vulnerable in accidents than other motorists

POLOKWANE – With May being Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month; bikers and motorcycle clubs around the city have scheduled a number of events to enlighten motorists and bikers on how to be safe on the roads.

Arrive Alive has also been creating awareness on this matter, giving safety tips for bikers and other motorists on the road.

These include:

1. Passenger car drivers must allow greater following distance behind a motorcycle.

2. Drivers must also show extra caution at intersections. Most crashes occur when a driver fails to see a motorcyclist and turns left in front of a motorcycle.

3. Drivers should never try to share a lane with a motorcycle. Always give a motorcycle the full lane width.

4. Motorcyclists should avoid riding in poor weather conditions.

5. Motorcyclists should position their motorcycles to avoid a driver’s blind spot.

6. Motorcyclists must use turn signals for every turn or lane change.

President Sarel Nong of the Sapa Yopa Motorcycle Club also avails himself, together with some of the other experienced bikers to help younger and less experienced bikers every Sunday; teaching them different moves to help them become better and safer on the roads.

The bikers also promote bike shops that sell safety gear like clothing, helmets and other protective clothing to keep bikers safe.
