Register your domestic worker to protect both parties, say police

"Make sure you know who your domestic worker is, get her particulars and keep a copy of her ID or work permit to avoid becoming a victim of crime," Capt Mohlaka Mashiane, Westenburg Police Spokesperson, warns.

POLOKWANE -According to Mashaine there are residents who do not know the people who work for them and when things are stolen from their homes they are unable to identify the suspects.

“These are people who spend most of the time at your house alone, therefore make sure the person is not a stranger to you. Get their information and make sure you know where they live so that should you need to find them you will know where to start,” Mashiane advised.

Mokgadi Pela, Spokesperson for the Department of Labour, said another way residents can protect themselves is by registering their domestic workers at the department for Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) because their personal information will be correct and saved in the department’s system.

“If a person works for you more than 27 hours a month then you must register the person with the department for UIF. This step is beneficial to both the employee and the employer, because the fund gives temporarily relief should the need arrive. Two percent of the domestic workers salary is contributed to the fund of which 1% is paid by the employer and the other percentage is paid by the employee,” Mokgadi said.

Documents needed when registering for UIF are certified copies of the employee and employer’s IDs.
