Cappies RCL will represent the learners

The Representative Council of Learners (RCL) is a mandatory body, according to departmental requirements, and is made up of three learners from each grade.

POLOKWANE – Capricorn High School recently introduced the Representative Council of Learners (RCL). For many years the school had only the matric board which was responsible for the RCL duties, but now the duties of the matric board will be evenly distributed.

Representative Council of Learners (RCL) explained

The learners have to be nominated formally for the positions. The RCL forms a vital link between the staff and learners of a school and ensures effective all-round communication. All members act as direct spokespeople for their respective grades.

The RCL is expected to have regular report sessions with the school in order to sustain transparency and communication between all spheres of the school.

These report sessions will serve as an opportunity to offer feedback of the suggestions the RCL has received from the learners and how, to the best of their ability, they aim to constantly improve everyone’s experience at the school.

Difference between RCL and matric board

Thato Mathsa, Capricorn High School captain and head boy, said the RCL is the body that represents learners at the school and described the matric board as a body that manages the whole school.

He said the matric board is responsible for things such as school fund raising events and school tournaments among others.

“The matric board is a culture at Capricorn High School and there is no way the body can be replaced by RCL or any other school body. Capricorn is the only school that has a matric board and it is one of our proudest traditions,” Thato explained.

Reneilwe Lesufi, the second Capricorn High School captain and head girl, said the matric board does not interfere with the duties of the RCL in any way and this ensures the smooth running of the school and its leadership bodies.

“It takes commitment, discipline and hard work for the matric board to function.”
