You will be fined for placing Illegal adds on traffic signs

According to the Polokwane municipality bylaws placing advertising flyers on traffic and road signs is  illegal and a fineable offence. 

 

POLOKWANE –  The Polokwane policy on outdoor advertising control of August 2007 states that an advertisement maybe legally be placed on public facilities and structures which are not intended primarily for advertising. These structures include benches sidewalk litter bins pole mounted bins and bus shelters. These structures however exclude road traffic signs traffic lights or any other road signs. In the provincial Gazette of Limpopo number 5.1.1(4) it is stated that no advertisement may be attach to a road traffic sign or signal or combined with a road traffic sign or signal.

According to Polokwane Municipality spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene the municipality is aware of the problem of traffic signs being defaced or abused by illegal advertisements and remove them when discovered.

“These adverts are illegal and must be taken down by the municipality. A fine of up to R500 can be given to a person who puts up an illegal advert.”Chuene  said. She added that residents can contact the Polokwane municipality to report this matter on 015 290 2000.
