She asked and he said yes

One of the leap year traditions states a woman can ask a man to marry her. After a dare Amanda Fasen did just that.

POLOKWANE – On 20 February Fasen asked her boyfriend, Michael Cooper, to marry her…

Their story is not your classic love story, they’ve known each other for six years, but ended their relationship when Michael moved to Johannesburg, Amanda moved to Mokopane during this time. Michael moved back to Polokwane and they started to visit each other frequently again. They soon realised the spark was still there and Amanda moved back to the city last January.

“As per her request, I made sure to be home early on Monday (20 February), and expected the evening to be a normal date night,” Michael said.

“I bought a ring for him a while ago, and a few days before I decided to ask him to marry me everything was almost spoiled as the ring fell out of my pocket and he saw it. Luckily I have quite a few rings myself so he did not suspect anything,” she laughed.

“I made reservations at Ocean Basket Mall of the North and wanted to ask him by ordering a sushi platter with the words ‘marry me’, but the manager suggested he organised dancers to do a special dance for us and at the end they will have a banner with the words ‘marry me’ written on it.”

When they arrived at the restaurant everything seemed as usual and they placed their orders, this was shortly followed by the dance.

Amanda pointed out the dancers to Michael and he soon started to notice this was not just the usual type of dance often seen at the restaurant.

“I noticed her friends and several papers lying on the ground. When the singing stopped I turned around to ask the reason and saw her waiting on one knee with the ring in her hand. I couldn’t believe what was happening and shook my head a couple of times, but I said yes,” Michael said.

Amanda said she was so scared he would say “no” that she cancelled their orders and paid the bill for the sushi platter beforehand.

“I asked his mother, father and brother for permission to ask him to marry me. I am so grateful to be part of such a loving family,” Amanda said.

“I planned to propose to her later in the year as I wanted to finish my qualification and then get settled, but this was an awesome surprise. We had our ups and downs, but I am happy we have come this far. Also, another bonus is the date of the anniversary as I only have to buy a gift every four years,” Michael laughed.
