International Mother Tongue Day was celebrated in Moletjie on Tuesday

POLOKWANE – To encourage communities to prioritise their mother tongue and to promote multilingualism and language diversity, the department of sport, arts and culture held a late celebration of International Mother Tongue Day on Tuesday.

International Mother Tongue Day is celebrated annually on 21 February, but due to circumstances the department was not able to host the celebration on that day and had to postponed to 8 March.

The celebration was held at the Moletjie Mošate Tribal Authority Hall with the theme: Quality Education, Languages of Instruction and Learning.

There were different speakers at the event including MEC Nandi Ndalane, who encouraged residents not to be ashamed of their mother tongue and to use it proudly as South Africa is a multilingual country with  11 official languages.
