Couple robbed after helping ‘lost’ girl

A couple were robbed of jewellery, cell phones and other valuables after helping a seemingly lost girl home on Saturday.

POLOKWANE – A couple were robbed of jewellery, cell phones and other valuables after helping a seemingly lost girl home on Saturday.

When Hilda Grobler and her fiancé, Wynand Jordaan saw a girl sitting on the pavement in Kiaat Street, Flora Park they decided to stop and help.

“We were on the way home when we saw her, she had been crying and I decided to stop to find out what the matter was,” Grobler explained.

She said the girl, who looked around eight years old, told them she was lost, and that she had been visiting friends in the neighbourhood.

When her parents failed to collect her, she decided to walk home and in the process got lost, she said. Grobler said the little girl said she lived in Hauptfleisch Street and asked them to take her there.

“I know where Hauptfleisch Street is and as it is not far from our house we decided to drive the little girl home,” Jordaan explained.

He said they drove up and down Hauptfleisch Street waiting for the little girl to point out her home as she did not know the number. They were stopped by three men who claimed to know the girl.

“As soon as I opened the door to talk to the men, one of them pushed me up against the car and said he would kill me as he was carrying a gun if I did not hand over our jewellery, cell phones and other valuables. The other two men were on my fiancée’s side of the car and the little girl got out of the vehicle and stood with the two men,” Jordaan said.

He said the men took his car keys and threw them into some bushes nearby before they left in a silver sedan, taking the little girl with them.

According to him the little girl knew the men and went with them willingly.

The couple said they opened a case at the Polokwane Police Station shortly thereafter. At the time of going to print, Polokwane Police Spokesperson, WO Lesiba Ramoshaba was unable to confirm this.

Provincial Police Spokesperson, Col Ronél Otto, said she has no information on any similar cases and this will be the first of its kind reported in the province.
