POLOKWANE – The area around the now closed municipal public swimming pool has been prioritised for strict policing after it was identified as being a drug-dealing hub, the city’s police confirmed earlier this week.

This follows after increased criminal activity was observed in the area during the December holiday and continues to date.

Review also received several complaints in this regard….

A redident who lives close by described the area as a criminals’ paradise.

She said activity she has observed indicates there is drug dealing going on. This was confirmed by an undercover police officer who investigates drug dealing in the city. He confirmed there is an ongoing investigation which includes the area in question. “People come to the public pool’s parking lot by car and attract drug dealers who wait for customers by flicking their headlights on and off,” he explained. He further said these drug dealers are called “candy men” by their customers.

The types of drugs that can be purchased are indicated by means of graffiti in the area and this is known as “tagging”.

He warned that neither drug dealers nor their customers should be confronted, but rather reported to the police.

Review’s attention was also drawn to reports that several vehicles have been broken into in the mentioned parking area, however, no cases have been opened with the police.

Polokwane police Spokesperson, Capt Ntobeng Phala said the police have prioritised this area. “We have increased patrols and urge residents to report all criminal matters to the police,” he said.

Municipal Spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo, said several complaints about the safety of the area had been received. He further said up the graffiti is something the municipality may consider at a later stage.
