Learners’ thoughts on the importance of exercise

Schools in the province have already started with their athletics programmes to prepare athletes for the national meetings in various activities

POLOKWANE – Review speaks to a few athletes to hear their views on sports activities and the benefits associated with exercise.

Vernette Leonie says athletics doesn’t matter that much to her since she puts all her focus on her studies.

“I don’t spend much time on the field exercising because I believe academic work is more important. If I had the option I would attend a school that does not have sports programmes,” Vernette explains.

Esmerelda Jacobs says athletics is important and most learners use sports activities to relax and refresh their minds after a long day at school. She adds athletics and other sport are valid career paths. Esmerelda further urges fellow learners to take part in different sporting codes in order to know what they are really good at.

Pheladi Matjiya emphasises sport helps people to stay fit and live a healthy lifestyle. “Exercise promotes mental health. It is thought that exercise increases the circulation of blood to the brain and the rest of the body. Exercise also stimulates the growth of nerve cells in the part of the brain used for memory,” says Pheladi.

As for Winnie Monyuwa, exercise helps her relax and reduce stress. She urges her friends to take part in athletics to have peace of mind.

Leana Swarts says sport keeps children busy and away from harmful situations. She adds that sport teaches one perseverance and hard work. She also urges youths to take sport seriously.

Zuleika Ferns says athletics made her realise her strengths and weaknesses. “I represented the province in a few national athletics meetings and I believe I will use my talent to make a living one day. Young people should exercise to stay active and live a healthy lifestyle,” Zuleika urges.

Hlulani Mathebula and Mashoto Nyaka say they exercise to keep fit and live a healthy lifestyle. They also urge children to start taking part in sport at an early age so they can master the techniques.
